The Jamaican National Anthem

Eternal Father bless our land,
Guard us with Thy Mighty Hand,
Keep us free from evil powers,
Be our light through countless hours.
To our Leaders, Great Defender,
Grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, Truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, Land we love.
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love.

Teach us true respect for all,
Stir response to duty’s call, strengthen us the weak to cherish,
Give us vision lest we perish.
Knowledge send us Heavenly Father,
Grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, Truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love.
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love.

National Pledge

Before God and all mankind, I pledge the love and loyalty of my heart, the wisdom and courage of my mind, the strength and vigour of my body in the service of my fellow citizens; I promise to stand up for Justice, Brotherhood and Peace, to work diligently and creatively, to think generously and honestly, so that Jamaica may, under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity, and play her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race.

Yesterday we celebrated Emancipation day and Thursday we will be celebrating 53 years as an Independent nation. Many persons will contest that is not so and that we would be better off as a dependent of Great Britain. I believe that though we have our perils, we have achieved some things and though it will be hard to regain the power we once had, the successes we have had can be motivation for what we once had. Take back our country.

Each time we sing the National Anthem we ask God for guidance, protection, strength to persevere and knowledge. Added to that, the ability to see pass the stumbling blocks that we face. Unfortunately, we forget to listen to what we sing and often times forget that we the people have the power. That is why slavery was abolished, we realized that there is more to us than being mere black stupid objects; we are destined for greatness. Persons would argue that we have different forms of slavery. Many people, speak about “modern day slavery”, however we have not noticed that we have to right to leave if we are not satisfied with the way we are being treated.

I remember reading one of the comments for the article “Respect the National Flag and Anthem”, written by the Jamaica Observer on August 1,2015. Someone commented:

“Regardless. A flag and a national anthem should be respected at all times no matter who you are. It’s what has made a country, what our fore fathers has fought and die for a nation so our children and their children can be proud of. Why are some of us questioning it now. You can’t be a proud Jamaican and not be proud of our flag and anthem”.

I am not well learned on the issues of the society. However, I must admit that there are things to celebrate. Often times we complain and say that there is nothing here and that there is no change Heck! I’m not doing my masters here; my intention is to return after receiving my masters and help build the country. It doesn’t help us if we decide to sit and wait for our leaders to change for the better. If they aren’t doing the right thing, why not take matters into our hands? Be the change you want, that you expect.

So, every time that I am given the opportunity to celebrate my Freedom and Independence, I gladly do so as I have a reason to do so in my own way.

My First Time

I never thought that I’d be writing blogs on topics of interest. I must say that I thought that people who do these things are really smart and poets. People who you’d look at in awe and say “speak to me oh great one”.

Yet, I am here and ready to dish out all that is in this head of mine, to those who are willing to hear and in this case read.

This is just the beginning….
